PrimalScript: Did You Know?

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 by Jeffery Hicks
This is the first of an open-ended series of short tips on using PrimalScript. If you've ever used the product you know there are a wealth of features. I want to devote some blog time periodically to show-off some feature you may not have been aware of or a quick tip to use the product more efficiently. If you don't have a copy of PrimalScript, you can download a 45 day evaluation copy from PrimalScript.com.   More »

That was the title of a recent blog post by Jeffery Snover on the PowerShell team blog. I recently had the privilege of sitting down…   More »

The Next Big Thing

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by Jeffery Hicks
During a recent PowerScripting podcast, I posed the question, "Virtualization is a hot and major topic today in IT. What is the next big thing? What is coming that is just under the radar but will play a major role for IT professionals?" I'd like to start a meme on this topic. Here's my contribution.   More »

PowerShell Production Poll

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008 by Jeffery Hicks
If you've been to the SAPIEN blog, hopefully you've noticed the simple poll: "Are you using PowerShell in a production environment?" Right now 75% of respondents are using PowerShell today to manage their network. I'm curious about the other 25%. I'm not passing judgement but am genuinely interested why an organization is NOT using PowerShell. Here are some reasons I can think of.   More »

Wayne’s World of IT Revised

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008 by Jeffery Hicks
I've blogged in the past about Wayne Martin and his outstanding list of command line tips. These are one line commands, some complex some simple, that you can use to accomplish a wide range of task. The overall number of tips is to 425 and Wayne recently reorganized them into 7 categories to make it easier for people to digest. There's very little scripting with any of these commands. Most use native or freely available command line tools. But because they are executed from a command line you could incorporate them into a script. I encourage you to check them out.   More »

Server 2008 Revealed

Friday, September 19th, 2008 by Jeffery Hicks
I run a few Windows Server 2008 servers in VMWare for my test and demonstration environment. Honestly, I put them up very quickly not really knowing what I was doing, especially with Server Core. If I had the time, I would have looked at Greg Shield's book Windows Server 2008: What's New/What's Changed. Like you I don't have time to read an exhaustive door stop of a book (not that those titles don't have value). What I needed was to learn about only the new Server 2008 features. I've been around long enough to know what a server is. All I needed was information on what was new in Server 2008 and what things changed from Server 2003.   More »

I am Ironman

Friday, September 12th, 2008 by Jeffery Hicks
I'm afraid a dangerous precedent has been set last night on the PowerScripting Podcast. I had a great time with Hal and Jonathon but there was a super hero question and I'm afraid I've started something I won't be able to control.   More »
