PrimalScript 2009: File Differencing

PrimalScript 2009 includes a new integrated file difference tool that provides more information and syntax colored displays and allows for faster review of individual modifications. Let’s take a look at how this operates.

To compare file differences, first open the files you want to view using the Tools | Compare Two Files menu option. Select the files using the supplied dialog. When done, you should see a screen similar to that shown below.

Pressing Ctrl+H will take you to the first difference. You can continue navigating through your documents using CTRL-Down for the next block, CTRL-Up for the previous block, or CTRL-E for the last block. The figure below shows you what a selected block looks like.

The colors used for highlighting the differences in files, is of course, customizable by the user.

SAPIEN is also releasing a stand-alone file differencing and merging tool called PrimalMerge 2009. PrimalMerge will not only let you view differences within similar files, but allow you to merge those differences from either the left or right pane. With PrimalMerge, you can also look for differences between two folders. It will indicate what files are different as well as what files are missing from which folders.
