Server 2008 Revealed

I run a few Windows Server 2008 servers in VMWare for my test and demonstration environment. Honestly, I put them up very quickly not really knowing what I was doing, especially with Server Core. If I had the time, I would have looked at Microsoft MVP Greg Shield’s book Windows Server 2008: What’s New/What’s Changed. Like you I don’t have time to read an exhaustive door stop of a book (not that those titles don’t have value).  What I needed was to learn about only the new Server 2008 features.  I’ve been around long enough to know what a server is. All I needed was information on what was new in Server 2008 and what things changed from Server 2003.

I’ve since gone back and read part of Greg’s book to clear up some misconceptions, learn how to do a few things and pick up a few new morsels of information. If you’ve ever met Greg or seen him speak at Techmentor, you’ll find his writing style is just like him: laid back and easy going but with a slight seething and roiling undercurrent of energy and enthusiasm for information technology.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Chapter 1: Introduction to Windows Server 2008
  • Chapter 2:  Installing Windows 2008
  • Chapter 3:  Server Management
  • Chapter 4:  Group Policy
  • Chapter 5:  Server Core
  • Chapter 6:  Active Directory
  • Chapter 7:  Terminal Services
  • Chapter 8:  Security & the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
  • Chapter 9:  IIS 7.0
  • Chapter 10:  Other New & Compelling Features

And as a bonus, you’ll find several chapters from the Windows PowerShell: TFM book which you can use as a jump start or refresher. So if you’re considering jumping to Server 2008 and wonder what you have in store, I encourage you to pick up a copy of Greg’s book. If nothing else download a sample chapter from SAPIEN Press. By the way, this title is also available as an ebook.

I had to go back and correct my description of Greg. You’ll have to catch him at Techmentor to see what I mean. :-)
