Technical Reviewers needed

PowerShell and VMWare guru Hal Rottenberg is hard at work on Managing VMWare with Windows PowerShell: TFM. We are now in need of a handful of committed technical reviewers.  Please make sure you can meet the software requirements listed below.

If you are interested in being a reviewer, please send an e-mail to errata@sapien.com by August 1,2008. The subject of your e-mail must be "VMWare Book Review" or your e-mail will be misdirected.

Once accepted into the Review program, you will have access to a Web site where you may download chapters and a review form. We encourage you to submit technical errors as well as more general feedback on each chapter.  Each reviewer who reviews all of the book’s chapters will receive a $100 gift card and a free print copy of the book (excluding shipping costs). The reviewer who submits the most technical corrections (that is, corrections - not just notifications of errors) will receive a special SAPIEN surprise gift pack.

In order to review a chapter, you must have submitted feedback for all prior chapters. You will only have access to one chapter at a time. In the past we have had a large response when asking for reviewers, but most of them have either provided no feedback or only provided feedback on 1-2 chapters. If you don’t have the time to download a chapter and submit feedback within about 2-3 days, then please wait for the finished book, instead :).

Software Requirements

- PowerShell v1 OR v2

- VMware ESX Server 3.x or 3i (Virtual Center is optional)

- VMware Server 2.0 beta (experimental but may be suitable for testing)

- VI Toolkit for Windows v1.0 (http://vmware.com/go/powershell)

  1. Want a free PowerShell + VMware Book—and cash? Says:

[...] print copy, of course, plus $100.  For more details and how to sign up, see Jeffrey Hick’s recent blog post on the SAPIEN Technologies [...]

  2. Scott Says:

Are there any indications on expected time commitment from the reviewers? Is it one chapter per week? I know it’s about 11 chapters, but any indication on the number of pages?

I would love to review the book, but it would be good to know the expectations of the publisher to make sure I can meet those expectations…

  3. Jeffery Hicks Says:

Great question. We have I think 4 chapters now ready to be reviewed. I have not seen the chapters myself so I don’t know how long each chapter is or how much code there is to test. But I’d assume at least several days per chapter. We like to get chapters turned around within a few days to a week of being made available.

  4. Jeffery Hicks Says:

Total page count will probably be around 400. At this point I have more than enough names to pick from. I wish I could use everyone and appreciate the interest.
